We are fast approaching the day in our Christian calendar which we refer to as Palm Sunday. It recalls the events of Jesus‘ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Crowds thronged the streets laying their cloaks on the ground before Him, rejoicing and waving palm branches above His head. This year, with the current lock-down restrictions, the streets will be empty and we’ll not be in church to sing the familiar words of “Ride on, Ride on in majesty”. However, we can still celebrate Palm Sunday and I’d commend to you an idea I read from Rev’d Janine Atkinson (Yorkshire URC Minister in the Spen & Calder Enterprise). She suggests that we lay a couple of coats on the floor of our hallway at home, as a symbolic way to welcome Jesus into our house and into our hearts. In our present difficult circumstances, Jesus still comes to us as the humble but strong figure whom we greet on Palm Sunday. “God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory to God!” (Lk.19 v.38)
